How are genetic diseases classified (e.g., single-gene, chromosomal, multifactorial)?

Genetic diseases can be classified into three main categories:

  • Single-gene disorders: Caused by a mutation in a single gene. Examples include cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, and Huntington’s disease.
  • Chromosomal disorders: Caused by a problem with the number or structure of chromosomes. Examples include Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, and Klinefelter syndrome.
  • Multifactorial disorders: Caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Examples include heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.
