What are genes, and how do they relate to genetic diseases?

Genes are the fundamental units of heredity. They are segments of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) that contain instructions for building and maintaining an organism. These instructions code for proteins, which perform various functions in the body.

Genetic diseases occur when there is a problem with a gene or set of genes. This can lead to a malfunctioning protein or a lack of a necessary protein, resulting in a health condition.
