How are genetic diseases inherited (e.g., dominant, recessive, X-linked)?

Genetic diseases can be inherited in different patterns:

  • Dominant inheritance: A single copy of a mutated gene is sufficient to cause the disease. Examples include Huntington’s disease and polydactyly.
  • Recessive inheritance: Both parents must pass on the mutated gene to their child for the disease to develop. Examples include cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia.
  • X-linked inheritance: The mutated gene is located on the X chromosome. These disorders are more common in males because they only have one X chromosome. Examples include hemophilia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
